JRDV has partnered with Solano Community College, American Roundtable of Black College Presidents and Haiti Tech to develop the first prototype community college campus in Haiti. The project represents a new-generation campus master plan that is focused on creating an academic facility that is both social center and learning center. The new campus is also a key step for Haiti to provide an international standard secondary education that will attract and retain Haitian students who are currently leaving the country for higher education and not returning. The new campus will provide state-of-the-art classrooms, technical labs, library, lecture halls and computer access center. It will also provide dorms, dinning, and administrative center. The design is based on sustainable principles that will provide a guide to sustainable building practices in Haiti. The physical design is centered on a vocabulary of arcades and courtyards that extend and connect classroom spaces to usable exterior spaces. The arcade elements also provide passive conditioning and natural day-lighting which dramatically lowers the energy requirements of the campus.
