Cathedral Building

TEAM: JRDV Architects
LOCATION: Oakland, California
TYPE: Commercial
SERVICE: Architectural Design
JRDV designed and constructed its own offices in the Cathedral Building, one of the finest Gothic high rises in the United States and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. JRDV’s office is designed to encourage team work with mobile desks that can be arranged into work groups of differing sizes on an as-need basis. In addition, floating white board panels can be positioned to create more or less privacy as well as encourage spontaneous note-taking, sketching, and discussions. The office includes advanced telecommunications to its satellite offices as well as a built-in hotel suite for overnight visitors. Modern utilitarian interventions are contrasted against the historical back drop of the original building. JRDV purchased and designed the space as part of its long-term commitment to revitalizing the core of downtown Oakland.
